Editorial Policy & Review Methodology
Hardware Acquisition
Every product reviewed on DIY Home Security HQ is purchased at full retail price from a public storefront. We do not accept manufacturer-provided hardware, press samples, seeded products, or review units. This policy is non-negotiable and has never been waived.
If a brand reaches out to provide hardware in exchange for coverage, the request is declined. If a brand offers payment in exchange for a positive review or score adjustment, the request is declined and logged.
Testing Protocol — 90 Days
All brand reviews represent a minimum of 90 days of real-world testing in a residential setting. During the testing period, we document:
- Battery drain rate (measured weekly, compared to manufacturer spec)
- App reliability — crashes, failed actions, latency to live view
- Motion detection accuracy — true positive rate vs. false alarm rate
- Camera wake-up latency — measured from motion trigger to first frame recorded
- Offline behavior — what continues to work without internet access
- Cloud dependency — which features require cloud connectivity
Customer Service Audit
Every brand review includes a secret shopper audit of customer support. We call the support line 3 times as an anonymous customer: once for a device issue, once for a billing question, and once requesting account cancellation. We record hold times, transfer counts, and resolution difficulty. Results are reported verbatim in the review.
Scoring Methodology
All brands are scored on a 0–10 scale across six dimensions:
- Value for Money: Hardware cost relative to functionality and longevity
- Reliability: Uptime, connectivity stability, false alarm rate
- Subscription Fairness: Functionality available without a paid plan, price relative to value, retroactive feature changes
- Offline Recording: Continued functionality during internet outages, cloud failures, and WiFi disruptions
- Support Quality: Hold times, resolution rate, cancellation ease
- Ecosystem Openness: Third-party sensor compatibility, monitoring provider options, data portability
The Overall score is a weighted average with Subscription Fairness and Offline Recording weighted 1.5× due to their long-term impact on user experience and cost.
Scores Are Updated
Brand scores are reviewed and updated when: (1) a brand makes significant pricing changes, (2) a firmware update meaningfully alters product behavior, (3) a brand moves features behind a new or expanded paywall, or (4) new reliability data becomes available. Each update is timestamped on the review page.
